NDTG Breaking Down Barriers Programme at HMP Spring Hill Careers Event – Creating Second Chances Through Demolition Careers

Everyone deserves the opportunity to start again. For ex-offenders preparing to re-enter society, securing meaningful employment is one of the biggest challenges, and one of the most powerful ways to rebuild a future.

The National Demolition Training Group (NDTG), in partnership with the Ministry of Justice and the Prison Service, is helping to create those opportunities through its Breaking Down Barriers initiative. Launched in 2024, the programme champions inclusive hiring by showcasing how demolition training can transform existing skills into long-term, sustainable careers.

On August 8th, HMP Spring Hill hosted a careers event that brought together NDTG and NFDC members for a day of engagement and opportunity.

  • City Demolition Contractors (Birmingham)
  • The Erith Group
  • J Mould Reading
  • Tilley & Barrett

joined the NFDC President Adrian Corrigan, the NFDC CFO, Lesley Ransome and Brian Carroll, NDTG Project Lead, to engage directly with residents preparing for release.

Attendees explored the breadth of skills needed in demolition, took part in an open Q&A, and even tested their abilities using a demolition simulator. The event highlighted demolition not only as a viable career pathway but also as a profession built on skills, safety, and career progression.

For residents, the event was a chance to envision a new future. For employers, it offered the opportunity to meet potential employees, challenge misconceptions, and demonstrate how inclusive hiring can strengthen the workforce, a vital step in addressing the industry’s ongoing labour shortages.

By opening doors to those ready to take a second chance, NDTG and NFDC members are making a positive impact on both individuals and the wider industry. With CCDO certification and NDTG-led training, ex-offenders can re-enter society with confidence, while demolition businesses gain skilled, competent professionals ready to deliver safely and effectively on site.
